the week in a nutshell

I think it's Sunday evening. Del, Jayde, Kyle & I are away. Camping. It's so good to get away from home, to relax and spend time together. We took off Friday after work. Set up in the campground, and subsequently slept for 12 hours. That was wonderful. Yesterday, after we finally got up, we went to the city for a couple of hours, and went we got back to the campground, Del & I both slept again. 2-3 hours later, it was time for supper. We played games until all hours-with the boys-card games-and then slept again until 1030 this morning. Too good to be true. Today has been a relaxing day of reading, eating, sunning, visiting, and just being bums! Beautiful weather today. Sun and blue skies!
This last week has gone so quickly. The last time I posted I mentioned all the things Jayde & I were going to accomplish on Wednesday. Well, lets just say, that didn't all happen. We got alot done, just not what was on that list. We went to my mom and dads for the morning, and ended up staying until 5. Got all the boxes unpacked that were still in the house. did some rearranging. Then we cleaned out a bunch of stuff in the garage. Andrea and Onyx came by, and they helped out. I'm so grateful for good friends! We got home and had a quick supper, and then we all went to the school awards night. Here's my moment of bragging! I hope I'm allowed. Both boys got awards of excellence for all marks above 80%. This is supposed to be their goal, and so far so good. Then there was a little surprise. Jayde got the award for Male Athlete in his class. He was so not expecting this. It was so much fun to see his excitement. As he told Kyle on the way home-this is the one he's proud of. Such a boy! Priorities or what!
Thursday, I worked an 8 hr day shift, while Laureen took my mom to the city for her tests. She had a bone scan, a brain CT, and she met with Anesthesia in preparation for Mondays procedure. Was a full day for them. After I got home from work, The boys and I packed the travel trailer for the weekend. We went to a neighbours house for supper. Had an awesome evening of wonderful visiting , and excellent food. Friday, I worked a 12 hr day. Kyle finished school at noon. Del and the boys picked me up from work at 730 and we were off.
I don't have anything wise to report or say. I'm not feeling that eloquent tonight. I'm just so grateful for family, friends, sunshine, green grass and tree, BBQ'd food, comfy beds,.........the list goes on and on.
Take time to enjoy the time you're given. It's all a gift!

rambling.....

Hey, I'm writing a post, and its not from work and its not in the morning! Normal hours!
Does anyone truly care what I write about my life/our life? I mean besides my family who is forced to care???? Sometimes I'm not sure whether to write about our families regular routine, which we don't seem to have anymore, or my extended families trials, or what!! So, I just ramble on and don't seem to say anything important at all. I know some people are checking in for updates from my mom, so I'm trying to include a little bit of everything.
My mom-I took her to the hospital yesterday, after a busy short of breath weekend for her. This was not a regular appt, but an appt I set up with my friend, the good doc, who took x-rays, and subsequently drained fluid from around her left lung. 1 1/2 litres later, she was so relieved to be able to breathe a little free-er. You may wonder, is this all the fluid-no, it wasn't. But, that was kind of the max thats suggested to take at this point. I took her home after the procedure, and she felt so good she was tempted to 'do stuff'. But, she was under strict orders to relax for the day. Needed to give her lungs/chest time to adjust to the extra space. Today, we got her appts for CT scan, and bone scan. This is all worked out to be done Thursday morning-along with her pre-op admission appt for Mondays admission.
Our little family-Well, school is almost done. Actually, Jayde is now done. Kyle has 2 1/2 days left. The boys both have awards night tomorrow evening. Be interesting to see what it is they get awards for. I spent the day at work today, re-arranging the med room. It's kind of nice to clean and organize stuff when its not your own. Or, its easier to do someone else's stuff, for me anyway. Del has been busy at work, as its been chemical season. It's starting to wind down, so maybe the weekends will free up a little.
We're hoping to get in some camping this next month. I guess we'll see how we fit it in between work, and moms stuff.
It was so exciting for me to cut the lawn the other day. I wish I had taken some pictures of our front lakes. Del has spent so much time pumping water off the lawn, and I got to cut most of the front lawn. And then we got blessed with a little rain again last night. And now this evening. Ugh, I was hoping it would be good for awhile. Oh, well. And to whine a little more-those mammoth mosquitos!!! I BBQ'ed last night. On the fire pit. Oh, my, those mosquitoes were nasty!! Jayde tilled the garden yesterday, and he doused himself with spray before the started cuz the bugs were swarming him!
Had our last two calves born this week. All done for another season. I did not see one delivery this year. We did not even have to pull one calf. And Del saw only one birth. Wow! What a change from last year.
Two cats have had babies, up in the shop roof. Can't even get at them to see how many there are. Kind of disappointing to miss the best stage.
I saw a 3 legged coyote in the garden the other morning. What a sickly thing. Must have had mange. I woke up Del, and he went out to try and shoot it. I left for work, as I was running late, and by the time Del drove around the yard's bush with the 4 wheeler, the thing had hid in the bush. Haven't seen it since.
Tomorrow, Jayde and I are going to do yard work, cook, bake, haul and unpack stuff at Grandma's house.....laundry.... whipper snip the weeds in the back yard, spray round up, ........and end the day with awards night. Should be a good one!
Time for bed! Goodnight!

It's 0130. Back to work for me. This has been a busy week, once again.
Monday, was mom and dads big moving day. The moving people, along with my brothers, niece, and my dad, brought all their belongings and moved it into the 'new' house. What an awesome display of support-church friends cleaned the house during the day, fixed up the yard, and helped with moving in. We had supper at the house in the evening, and then mom and dad went to their trailer at the farm for one more night. Tuesday, I got to go to work for an 8 hour day, while others helped organize the house enough for my parents to stay there. I took my mom to help her buy a new washer and dryer. They even delivered and set up the appliances immediatley! Then I went home and did some housework, yard work, etc.... Wednesday, I spent most of it at home. Cut some of my lakefront property. Del has been spending his weekend and evening hours pumping water across the road into the ditch, trying to get some of the water off the lawn. So I cut patterns in the grass, trying to get as much cut as possible. Talk about a lot of hay!! Even got the garden hoed, (yes, it's my moms), laundry is done, BBQ-d supper, uncovered the kitchen counter and the dining table. Thursday, I was the official chauffeur for my moms appts. She started in the morning by seeing the local GP, who will be the go to guy for whatever is needed. Then we had a quick lunch and headed to the city to see the respiratory specialist. First mom was assessed by the resident, and then she was seen by the 'top' guy. So he presented us with options, actually, he had one option. And we are going with his option. Mom is booked for a procedure on the 30th, to remove the fluid around her left lung, and then they will try to seal that area so it will not absorb fluid again. This will require a one night stay in hospital should it work according to plan. This has an effective rate of 70%. This should alleviate some of her shortness of breath. She will be getting two scans in the near future, one on her brain, and one of her bones. These are common areas for cancer to spread to, and need to be checked to see if they're affected at all. Looks like an oncology appt the first days of July with chemo to follow shortly thereafter. So, after this appt, mom had her bld work done, EKG, and then we were out of there. Mom & I did some grocery shopping, while dad napped and read in the car. We met my sister for a abit at the hospital, which was a nice way to sum up the medical part of the day. After shopping we came home. Mom was so happy when she got to the house and she seen how Laureen and Michelle had cleaned out the spare room, which was now ready for company. The main floor was now liveable!! I got home at 930. Such a whopper of a headache by this time. Advil!!! I should own shares in the ibuprofen/acetaminophen companies! Friday, I spent time on the phone in the morning, worked with laundry, kitchen stuff, and then I made an anniversary party celebration note. Sent out some emails regarding this. The family has decided to cancel the public celebration due to moms desire to focus on treatment and not have to worry about effects of treatment, and how that would effect the party attendance for her. Need to get these notes in the mail on Monday! Went to school to check out the fun day the kids were having. the PAC did lunch and organized Scoop a Lot orders. They had it all done by the time I got there. They're an awesome group! Chatted with some teachers. I'm really gonna miss the staff when Kyle is done in that school after next year. They're a wonderful bunch of educators!
So, I got home, had a 1/2 hour nap, got up and di dsome yardwork, ..........went to work for a 12 hr night. And now, my eyes are so tired!!!!! What I would do to go to sleep!
The kids are almost done school. Jayde has one more day,and Kyle has all of next week. They were busy doing yard work when I left tonight, and they're supposed to get it done by tomorrow afternoon. Cut and swept. All that hay has got to get off the grass or it will die due to lack of light!
Tomorrow will be another good day. Kyle's team is having wind up in the city, but we are opting out this time. Too many things going on. TAking one day at a time, sometimes its an hour at a time. Minute.....
One of my nieces graduated tonight. Apparently she walked off with a bunch of awards. Congratulations,Katelyn! Another niece is graduating next week; Congratulations Jessica. Another niece, Bethany, is being baptized on Sunday. Way to go, Beth! Exciting times for this family.
So, my focus now is to maintain sanity, spend time with my family, get my parents where they need to go, work my shifts, and look forward to some camping time with my hubby and kids, and look forward to a Friesen get together in July. Got to have something to look forward to, to get through.
Have a great weekend!

June 16 catch-up

Let's continue in diary format........
-Wednesday evening-I should have counted how many people came to help pack at mom and dad's house. But, I didn't. I think my whole family was there, minus 6. Plus some friends, and a cousin and her daughter; made for some quick work of packing. 2 hours and it was done. Some of the neighbours had prepared supper for all of us, so we got to go to the house across the road, for supper during packing, and once again for snack after we were done. I am so grateful for everyone who helped out. Amazing! I think we got home at midnight. The boys slept all the way home!
-Thursday-I can't rememer what we did. Really, I can't.
-Friday-Jayde and I left in the morning, for Fargo. He had his first game at 7 pm. Tied.
-Sat-Jayde played at 11 and 930. (pm) Shopped in between. ate.... And had quite the interesting evening. They issued a severe weather warning at 730 pm, for 815. For wind, rain, hail, and tornados. We had planned to leave for the rink at 815, from the motel. But looking at the sky to the west, and I decided to leave at 805. Trying to outrun/drive the storm. That cloud was so ominous looking. Dark blue/black with crazy swirls. I took a new route to the rink, which I hadn't taken before, but it was supposed to be faster. Halfway there, the trees started swaying and the rain started lightly, and then all of a sudden, there was static on the radio, and then a horn on the radio, and a crazy loud horn started wailing, right beside where we were parked at a red light! Well, my anxiety level was starting to elevate! The van in front of me started to drive, right thru the red light, and I wondered is this what they do here?? Obviously, the horn meant TORNADO-I remembered from the winter I spent in Texas as a kid. The announcement came over the radio to abandon all vehicles and find shelter in a large building. So I'm picking up the speed on the back roads, trying to get to the rink! Getting to shelter, you know. Got to the rink-sheets of rain by now. I dropped Jayde at the door with his equipment, and gave him strict instructions to stay by a wall, with a group of people and not take off on his own. I found a parking spot and ran into the rink. Soaked!! They had stopped all play at both rinks in the facility, and had herded all players into the halls along the dressing rooms, as they were in the middle of the building. All adults were huddled in groups in front of the TV, watching and listening to the storms progression. It lasted about 10 minutes, and no, we did not see a tornado! What relief! 1/2 hour delay and the games were on again. Drama, or what!! Got back to the hotel at midnight. The team won both their games.
-Sunday-Dennis took Jayde to the rink for 815, while I took Linda and the younger boys for game start at 915. Won that one. We checked out of the hotel, did lunch, walked in the stores, and then back to the rink for 415 game. They won that one as well. Hit the road at 635. Drive thru supper in Grand Forks, and off to the border. 5 min wait and we were back on Canadian soil. Home at midnight.
-Monday-reality is back. I went to mom and dad's fifth wheel trailer this morning to fetch her while my brothers, dad, and niece, went to Steinbach to meet the moving people. They get to load up while I get to watch my mom. I had her at my house this morning where she has cleaned my kitchen, and then we watched TV and chatted. We'll all go to the new house when the moving truck arrives.

So how is my mom doing?? Some days are better than others. She has very little energy and fatigues quickly. Any amount of exertion makes her very short of breath. Her playing around by my kitchen sink seemed to make her very happy. She has typically been the 'energizer bunny', and is having trouble adjusting to not being able to do everything. Her mind is running ahead of her and she's wishing she could keep up. Seems to be important to keep her occupied/distracted. Our minds are so sensitive, aren't they??? She just left for her trailer, (across the road) to have a nap. Then she'll come back here.
I have supper in the oven. I'll take it with us to town, and feed whoever will feel like eating. Hopefully we can get stuff into the house and set up enough for them to stay there tomorrow night.

So, hockey is done for this season. I'll wash it up this week and put it away! Don't know how I'll cope with grocery shopping. It's been so nice to have the variety in the city, to choose from.

I'm living the sunshine today! Supposed to be nice all week. Maybe it'll dry enough for me to cut my long grass and beautiful white flowers-hopefully in a few days!

Facts vs. Emotion

Hmmmmm-do I write factual, or shall I write with emotion? That is a dilemna. Think like a man, or process like a woman? Sometimes that has to be a conscious decision, you know. I'll probably express a little of both.
I'm going with a rundown of the last 7 days-
-Thursday-stuff at home during the day-I think-oh, yeah, now I remember. This was the day I was going to cook, clean, etc.... make food to take to mom and dads house. Well, I got quite alot accomplished. I spent the morning on the phone; found some homes in town for sale. And, I cooked 3 pots of soup to take along to moms. Laundry, and a quick clean up. Afternoon-Michelle and I went to town to drive around to look at houses, and actually went thru one. Had Onyx with me all day. Poor kid, he was on his own; played happily all day, and then slept all the way to town and back. Then in the evening, the kids had hockey in the city.
-Friday-left home at 745, cuz Kyle had to be at the rink by 915. Game at 1015. Won that one. Then back to the rink for 3. Game at 4, which they won as well. Spent a good part of the day on the phone. Arranged to view 3 homes on Saturday afternoon. My sister met us at the rink, and then we went to my parents for the evening and the night. Did some little jobs for my mom, and then had some discussions with friends and family regarding the necessities of life. I think it was 2 am by the time I hung up the phone, again. (I'm so grateful for modern technology and cell phones!) Finally, fell asleep around 3-couldn't shut down!
-Saturday-up at 530. Had to be in the city by 7 for Kyle's game. They won. Alyssa brought my parents to the city and we traded off, while I took my parents to Arborg and she stayed with Kyle for his next game at 2. They won. I went to Arborg. Did a quick lunch with my parents, and then took my mom for her long awaited hair perm appt. I had asked around, and actually found someone to do her hair, last minute. (She had an appt for the day after she went into hospital and had to cancel!) Then, my siblings and our spouses, with my parents, viewed homes from 3-4. Circumstances in life sure change the perspective on house shopping! After the tours, we all went to Chicken Chef to mull over the possibilities. Pros and cons of each home. Went back to one of the homes and made an offer on the home, which was accepted. Worked out the details-possession date-1 week. Del went home with Kyle, and then off to camp to pick up Jayde from the church youth event. They were having an all weekend event, which Del took him to on Fri evening. Jayde wanted to come home early to spend some time with Grandma. I stayed in town until housing details were worked out. Home at 830. My brother and his wife stopped by, and then Del and I went across the road to my parents 5th wheel trailer, where they were. More arranging of details for the next week.
-Sunday-tried to take care of the tornado that has been happening in my kitchen, and then we went to the city for Kyle's last game. They won the final game 5-1. Gold medal! Yay!!!! Back home by 930. I walked to mom and dads for a quick visit.
-Monday-worked 12 hour day. home in the evening by 815. helped Del and the boys get the bulls on the trailer. Lucky bulls, got to get out there with the cows!
-Tuesday-worked 12 hour day. home at 815. went for a crop touring ride with Del, and then picked up Jayde at 11. He had his last practice. Del and Kyle moved the last little bunch of steers out to pasture tonight.

That brings us to today. Whats in the plans for the next week?? Gonna have to be super organized. Today -I need to do some paperwork this morning. Laundry and such! This after noon I 'm going to town to pick up more boxes, and then I'm picking up the boys from school at 330. My family and some friends are meeting at mom and dads house to pack it up in one evening. Work bee tonight! Want to have it all done, and moved into the garage in 3 hours.
Friday morning, Jayde and I leave for Fargo. This is Jayde's last tournament of the season. I've been anticipating this for awhile, and I think this is going to work out. The last week I was wondereing if it was gonna happen for me, but I think its going to be fine. Monday morning, the movers will load up mom and dads stuff and bring it to the new house. (no its not new in years) Some local church ladies have kindly offerred to clean the house, so thats one more thing taken care of. Hopefully, they'll be settled in Monday evening.
I just realized I'm supposed to work on Tuesday, but mom has some kind of appt on Tues. Have to check out the papers on that tonight, to see what she's actually getting done.
I spoke with Cancer Care yesterday, and they are hoping to see her within the next 2 weeks.

I know some of you are wondering-how are we holding up? I think we're doing ok. Really ok, I think. It's easier to cope with something like this, when you have a mission, and can actually do something about it. I know this move is something my mom has wanted for awhile, and she became desperate about it the last couple of weeks-asking about it every phone call. She is so relieved that we have 'taken over' and gotten this going. She needs to have peace about location and management of driving and care and such. She's so concerned about dad being looked after. His vision options are so frustrating right now, that she needs to know he's not stuck out there by himself. I think the move has also given her a bit of hope. Distraction too. I know the community will welcome them back with open arms. Great support system in place around them.

There is frustration for some at the wait period that mom is being put through. Yes, it would be nice to be seen sooner rather than later. But, there are so many people in this province, that are in the same shoes, or even worse. There are many hurting families that are waiting for medical care. And, sometimes a little wait can be beneficial in trying to find the right treatment, and building up the body in preparation for what it might be put through in leu of treatment.

There you have it-a whole lot of facts, with some emotion to make it reality. Anyone taken a good look at my lake front property lately? I have it made in my yard. Lakes, surrounded with bright cheery yellow flowers. I spoke with our municipality head hauncho yesterday regarding the lack of drainage options for our yard, and he said he'd make a recommendationt to our councillor. Time will tell if that gets us a ditch, culvert, or something to get rid of the impending mosquito breeding grounds!
Time to throw in a load of laundry! Have a great day!

reality in another form

here's the update on the circus at our house-
-the auction sale is over and done with. How did it go, everyone asks. My answer is blaise-you win some and you lose some! that is life. time to move on.
-after the sale, we decided it was time to get away from the farm, and we went to the city to watch Jayde play hockey. We stayed there for night, and then he played again on Sunday, at noon. After that, we went to visit my mom in hospital. Seemed she was in good spirits.
-Dels maternal grandpa died on Sunday, and the funeral was today.
-I worked Monday days, and found out the funeral was on Wednesday, so I found people to work my Tues and Wed nights, so I could go to the funeral.

I'm almost at a loss for words. My mom had a CT done on Monday, and the report came back on Tuesday. They are 99 % sure it is cancer. Yeah. It's our turn. Lt sided lung cancer, which looks like its spread to the right as well. Tuesday became a day of dealing with nurses and docs by telephone. I have to say, I sure appreciate the staff at that hospital. They have been so good to me, communicating by phone. It became my job to inform the family. Something that isn't easy to do, but has to be done. My mom was discharged home this morning and will be referred to the city next week, to be seen by respiratory specialists and oncologists. Testing will be done to determine the type of cancer, prognosis, and treatment that can be done. Let me say this again, its much easier to deal with medical things when you're actually living close by the people who need help. Challenging times ahead with driving, appointments, house upkeep, and general TLC of both mom and dad.

9 more days of hockey-Go, Mustangs, Go! The driving for hockey will ease up and will be able to concentrate on other things. A tournament this weekend for Kyle, and a tournament next weekend for Jayde.
