Ugh!!!! I could kick myself tonight! I gave in to temptation tonight as Garvis drove thru McDonalds drive thru, and yes, I ordered myself a Big Mac. Wrong move!!! I haven't eaten junk like that in awhile, and I learnt my lesson tonight. All the way home from the city, belching and stomach rolling. GROSS! I've eaten Tums, with no relief. Crud, pure crud. I've been so good-not eating junk on the road. I have no appetite for that crap. And I blew it tonight. Actually, lets view it as reinforcement of why I shouldn't order it again. I'm sure I'll order a Big Mac again someday, but it will be awhile.
Yes, its midnight. And, I'm still up. Got home 20 minutes ago. Went to check the cows. And now I'm back in the house. Del & Jayde are not home yet. You're thinking, what is with these people???? Sometimes we wonder the same thing. The thing is, this is a ridiculously crazy week for the boys and their hockey schedules. And the cows started calving the end of last week. And the weather is getting suckier by the day.
So.........hockey. Here's the update. Jayde's directors cup, regional team, had a practice on Sunday, and played a game tonight, 2 1/2 hrs away, at 815 pm. Apparently they lost 4-2. So, they're still on their way home. Kyle's regional team, practiced on Sunday, and will play a game tomorrow night. Kyle started his 4 on 4 hockey in the city tonight. 2 nights a week, until the first week in June. Pure and simple fun, and hard skating. It was awesome to walk into that city rink tonight!!! People we hadn't seen since last spring, greetings all around, it was wonderful!!! And Kyle and his buddy, Blayze, had a great time! They skated, and bonded with their 'city' friends. And, they came off the ice, smiling. Grinning, actually!!! Pumped!!! 1 1/2 hrs of end to end skating. No off-sides, no icing the puck, no penalties, just pure and simple skating and playing with the puck. The guy in charge of the team, was reffing, and guiding the kids. Putting the fun into hockey. A great work out for the kids, and putting fun into the game, with no pressure for winning, or performing for the parents in the stands!!! Kyle and I got a ride into the city with Garvis and Andrea-its so wonderful to be able to share the driving with awesome friends! Tomorrow night, we're off to 1 1/4 hrs away. Wednesday night, Kyle is off, and Jayde has practice-almost next door. In our home town. What a break for us!! Thursday, we're off to start our weekend. Jayde has to be at his teams hotel between 4 & 5 in the afternoon. 3 hrs from here. Kyle needs to be at his tournament Friday evening, to be at the rink for 8 am on Saturday. Its going to be an exciting weekend!!!!
So the cows started calving a little early this year. Caught us off guard. Oh, well. Might as well get it over with. Last night, i got to do my first internal of the season. Last year I did not witness one cow birthing, and we assisted none. Last night, Del checks cows, comes in and says, another one is in labor. An hour later, he checks again, and no progress on hooves out the back. So, I get dressed and go out with him, all prepared to help out. We actually got the cow into a pen by her self, and into the head gate. Calves hooves are out the back end by a couple of inches. And I volunteered to do the internal and see whats going on. It didn't take long to decipher that those were the calves hind hooves. That means the calf is coming backwards. I've not delivered a backwards calf before. Can we pull it???? Will it fit. I'm thinking the pelvis is a little small, and once you start pulling, you're committed, and it better work. I can feel the calf is aligned correctly-yes, I felt its bottom and the tail was in place. So, we decided to put on the chains to pull this calf. Put the rope on the chains hook, and we go to work. We pull with the cows contractions, and my hand is up its back end, trying to stretch and make it easier on the poor cow. We pull and pull with not much progress, and I'm thinking maybe this is a bad idea. So, I go in and phone a neighbour for advice. He is wonderful and always so helpful. He offers to come right over and check it out. I haven't even made it back out to Del, before we hear his truck on his way. He assesses the situation, decides I was right, but he needs an official calf puller-its like a pulley system. He goes home, gets his apparatus, and hooks her up. Wheeled that big beautiful calf right on out of there. Another girl!!! Work on her to get her breathing warmed up, dried off..........Another success story. And she's still alive!!! Both mom and baby!!! Hows that for a play by play of a bovine birth?? I thoroughly enjoyed that experience. What a rush!! I don't mind that kind of work at all. If I didn't have a million other responsibilities, and jobs, thats would be therapeutic.
Work has been frustrating. I am working full-time all winter, and it seems like thats not enough. We are so short of part-time/casual help. Any time an RN is on vacation, calls in sick, or needs time, there is no one to do relief duty. The one part-time nurse, and the one casual nurse, are working all they can, beyond the call of duty, and its not enough. The full-timers are encouraged/required to pick up the slack. So I've picked up 20 hrs on my days off. No rest for the wicked, I guess. People wonder why nurses burn out???? I can tell you why-not enough time away from their work situations. I tell you I don't go to a shift anymore without my glasses, contact case/solution, makeup, and extra clothes-just in case I'm required to stay because the next shifts staff is unable to make it in. Anyone looking for nursing positions????? We've certainly got some at our facility!
Tomorrow-Mom has her Telehealth appt with Cancer Care. They have her CT and blood results. We shall see how effective this oral chemo has been. I will try to do an update here tomorrow, for those of you who might be interested.
Well, some relief received from the Tums, but I don't know if its enough to relax in bed. Del & Jayde aren't home yet.......gonna be some tired boys at the breakfast table in the morning!
Lesson learned-stay away from the fast food lineup!!! Pack food for the weekend away!
